Behind the scenes- aka planning stage

With only a week off for spring break, we were contemplating interesting destinations with direct flights and favorable weather. Eastern Europe was one of the contenders and so was Peru, but ultimately Turkey took the crown. Before long, the Turkey gang grew to include Reshamwalas and Mehtas and the Shyanis decided to join right after we committed to our tour company in January. The planning stage for trips like these is usually complex in a fun and interesting way. However, very early on we realized that unless we limit the trip to Cappadocia and Istanbul it may be efficient to get a customized private tour. The Turkey Travel Center that Komal-Dakshesh had used for their trip in 2013 were very professional and prompt in their communication and helped us design a great itinerary catered to our preferences. This would be our first experience outsourcing the details, excursions and the planning and we will find out how it all turned out! Until then, while
the Peru gang and the Turkey gang of Porter Ranch enjoyed their brief rendezvous at the LAX gates 134, 135 and are all set to kick off an exciting Turkish tale ahead!

Snowy Cappadocia

We had been prepped for a rainy, snowy and cold 2nd day touring with Mustafa. Kahan was looking forward to the snow and I used that as an incentive for him to wake up at 9am and go for breakfast, however he got plenty of it throughout the day. The landscapes at the Pigeon Valley looked even more stunning with the beige brown observation tower and the caves around it popping out of snow covered white slopes- almost out of a fairy tale. The next stop would be fairy tale chimneys- rock formations with mushroom like hats on it formed with thousands of years of wind erosion. The KEM gemstone store visit captivated me with it’s beautiful silver jewelry in precious stones. Zultanite is a stone local to Turkey which changes color when seen in different light. The color change is way more dramatic in the lab grown stone than the mined ones. Kusadasi to Pamukkale

We managed to make the super tight connection in Istanbul on Turkish airlines to our 45 minute long flight to Izmir, the country’s 3rd largest city. The 27 seater bus which would be our mode of transport ignited a lot of enthusiasm especially in the kids’ gang. An hour drive brought us to our hotel La Vista in Kusadasi, the island of birds. Once the rooms were sorted, we crashed only to wake up refreshed at 4.30am. For the first time I started entertaining the idea of the “5 am club”, after feeling invigorated after Yoga, a HIIT class and refreshing Girnar ginger chai, the rewarding side effects of jet lag! The morning vistas from the hotel lived up to the name of the hotel, clear blue sky merging with the crystal blue Aegean Sea dotted with smaller green islands. Kapadokya from the skies

A day of adventures No wonder Cappadocia is called the hot air balloon capital of the world with 150-160 of them flying together 250-260 days in the year. What makes this region special for this experience is the unique landscapes, weather and the handsome pilots as per our guy, Ahmed!! It was a breathtaking experience indeed viewing the entire valley from the sky perched in the hot air balloon albeit freezing cold making our toes uncomfortably frozen towards the end of the ride. Pictures do no justice to the views, one has to soak it all in while experiencing those moments. Before checkout we had our ATV ride through the valley. Parishi decided to stay in and unwind in the jacuzzi in the room healing her sore throat. Neha sustained an injury on her right elbow as her ATV toppled over on the first slope in the first minute of the ride. She had no major injuries thankfully and Krisha was safe behind her.
